Is Your Phone Ready for eSIM?
Carrier-locked phones cannot install eSIMs. Check your phone and unlock it before you travel.
Quick Check
The fastest way to know if your iPhone is unlocked:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Tap General, then About
- Scroll down to Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions", your phone is unlocked.
If you see anything else, like "SIM locked" or a carrier name, your phone is carrier-locked and needs to be unlocked before using an eSIM.
Why Does This Matter?
eSIMs work like digital SIM cards. A carrier-locked phone is programmed to only accept one carrier, so it will reject eSIM profiles from other providers — even if you bought a data plan for your trip. Unlocking is free from your carrier and only takes a few minutes in most cases.
How to Unlock by Carrier
Contact your carrier to request a free unlock. You will usually need your phone paid off and your account in good standing.

What About Third-Party Unlock Services?
We do not recommend paid third-party unlock services. While some may be legitimate, others are scams or use questionable methods that can stop working later.
- They cannot unlock phones that the carrier itself refuses to unlock
- They are not endorsed by Apple or wireless carriers
- You may lose money with no refund if the unlock fails
If you choose to use one, research reviews carefully and understand the risks.
What If You Cannot Unlock Your Phone?
Do not worry — you still have options to stay connected while traveling:
Use Your Carrier's Roaming Plan
Call your carrier and ask about international travel passes for your destination.
Rent or Buy an Unlocked Phone
A basic unlocked smartphone or a second-hand iPhone can be a great travel companion.
Buy a Local Prepaid Phone
Many airports and stores sell cheap prepaid phones with local service.
